Jean II Makoun arrived at Villa from French club Olympique Lyon in January 2011.

Having been snapped up by former manager Gerard Houllier, the midfielder made his debut in a 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

He also produced an impressive display in a 3-1 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Makoun made 10 appearances in claret and blue during 2010-11.

However, he struggled to force his way into Alex McLeish's plans when the Scotsman took over the following season.

Makoun made just one appearance in a Carling Cup tie against Hereford United.

He was loaned out to Greek giants Olympiacos for the majority of the 2011-12 campaign.

The Cameroon international played 35 times for the Piraeus club, including eight outings in the Champions League.

Makoun came to England following a long stint in the French top-flight with Lille and then Lyon.

His early career was spent with Lille, for whom he made more than 150 appearances during six seasons.

In 2008-09, he transferred to Lyon where he made his mark on the Champions League stage.

The highlight of his three seasons at Lyon was the only goal in a knockout stage victory over Real Madrid at Stade Gerland.
