International round-up: Delph makes debut in England victory

Liles

Fabian Delph made his much anticipated international debut in England's 1-0 friendly victory over Norway at Wembley.

The Villa midfielder replaced Jack Wilshere after 70 minutes and quickly settled into his new role, spreading the play and at ease with his team-mates.

Moments before Delph's arrival, new captain Wayne Rooney gave the three lions the lead from the penalty spot after Raheem Sterling was tripped by Omar Elabdellaoui.

Fellow substitute Danny Welbeck had two opportunities to double England's lead but saw his efforts saved and drift wide.

England dominated the opening stages and neat interplay between Liverpool's Sterling and Daniel Sturridge saw the former play in the latter but his shot was blocked as he pulled the trigger.

Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also went close but his effort was blocked by Norway's Martin Linnes.

Delph will be hoping to earn his second cap when England next take to the field on Monday September 8 where they travel to Basle to take on Switzerland in a Group E Euro 2016 qualifier.

Elsewhere, it was a good night for our goalkeepers Brad Guzan and Shay Given, who both kept clean sheets for their respective nations.

Guzan played the first half as USA earned a 1-0 win over Czech Republic in Prague.

A strike from Alejandro Bedoya after 39 minutes gave Jurgen Klinsman's side a victory in the friendly clash.

Given also got 45 minutes under his belt on his return to internatonal football, as the Republic of Ireland won 2-0 against Oman.

Kevin Doyle and Alex Pearce got the goals as Ireland earned a comfortable win in Dublin.

Given - making his first appearance for the national team since Euro 2012 - was replaced at half-time by Newcastle's Rob Elliot.
