Villa Ladies verdict: Hunt hails "complete player" Wilkinson

Brown

Head coach Joe Hunt hailed two-goal hero Katie Wilkinson after her brilliant brace earned a 2-1 win over Oxford United Women.

Forward Wilkinson rejoined Villa Ladies from Birmingham City Ladies earlier this season and Hunt is thrilled with the progress she's made since coming back to the claret and blues.

That culminated in the double that earned the victory on home soil, sending the team up to sixth in WSL2.

Hunt couldn't be happier with Wilkinson - and believes there's more to come.

He said: "I thought Wilko was our strongest performer. Everything she did was excellent.

"She's getting stronger and stronger every week - she played 75 minutes against London Bees and 90 minutes against Oxford Women.

"Her all-round game was superb - she adds to the team.

"We build off her - she is strong, she had good vision, she is the complete player because she can play as a No.9 or a No.10.

"That's what we have been lacking - and I mean no disrespect to the other girls here. She offers us so much.

"She holds the ball up so well - that was really apparent against Oxford United Women.

"She has always been strong at that aspect of the game ever since she was a young starlet in the academy.

"If the ball comes up to her, she secures it and brings people into play. She was outstanding against Oxford.

"They had some very big and strong centre-halves and she dealt with them well.

"She deserved both goals and should actually have had a hat-trick.

"She is the complete striker - she can play in numerous positions and knows where the goal is. We have been crying out for that."

Hunt also praised the impact of super subs Emma Follis, Alicia Robinson and Elisha N'Dow who all contributed greatly to the win - the team's third on the bounce.

He continued: "You look at all three substitutions we made and they all made an impact.

"Alicia and Elisha came on and did very well.

"Fair play to Emma too, the moment she came on we scored the winner. That's what she can do.

"We are just easing her back in at the moment. She has done two 30-minute runouts. Next weekend we will look to give her more match-time and then when we come to Watford Ladies we hope she's really at it.

"She's put herself in a really good position because she created the winning goal.

"Elisha is usually a centre-back but the last two weekends we have had to throw her into centre midfield. She did really well.

"For a 17-year-old to come into the game and control and dictate it, I thought she was outstanding.

"Alicia is class. She's a player you love watching. She's elegant. She has so much skill. She's just graceful. She has great vision.

"We have missed her. She got injured in the last match against Oxford. She's just recovering. We're easing her back in too. She's pushing herself with that performance to get back into the team."

Hunt wasn't entirely with the quality of the performance against Oxford United Women - but he accepts you can't beat the winning feeling.

He added: "We have won three on the bounce now but the strange thing is we haven't actually played that well in the games.

"The first half against Oxford this weekend, I thought we were pretty poor. It's that consistency.

"Credit to the girls in that they have won the games but the performances aren't really what we would have wanted.

"You can't beat that winning feeling, though. We played well against Sunderland at home and should have won 6-3 but lost 3-0. So we'd rather play bad and win than play well and lose. It's a balancing act."
