Rushall Olympic 2-7 Villa U21: Young guns hit magnificent seven

Harrison

Villa's young guns struck a magnificent seven at Rushall to continue their unbeaten start to pre-season.

Thomas Strain started the rout with two early goals before Henry Cowans, Jordan Graham, Graham Burke, Jerell Sellars and Michael Drennan all got in on the scoring act.

The visitors broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when Josh Webb bombed forward from right-back and did well to send over a first-time cross. Strain timed his leap to perfection and glanced a header into the bottom corner.

Cowans - an early replacement for the injured Jordan Lyden - orchestrated a quick counter-attack as Villa doubled their lead on the half-hour mark.

His terrific cross-field pass allowed Daniel O'Brien to run beyond the home backline and tee up Strain to convert at the back post.

Four minutes before the break, Cowans got on the scoresheet by robbing Sam Winwood of possession on the edge of the box before slotting past keeper Chris Gemmell.

Rushall's best chance of the first period fell to Craig Marshall who struck the bar from 20 yards.

The hosts did strike back six minutes into the second half when Gavin Caines headed a Tony Capaldi cross back into the danger area and Charlie N'Tamark smashed a half-volley past substitute goalkeeper Brad Watkins.

But Villa restored their three-goal cushion on the hour mark, Jordan Graham winning and then converting a penalty after being tripped inside the box.

Burke added number five on 71 minutes with a deflected effort from close range.

Sellars scored again on 73 minutes with a looping effort high into the net from the edge of the box, before Drennan lobbed the keeper seconds later to add number seven.

Rushall bagged another consolation seven minutes from time when Charlie Reece nodded home a Capaldi cross.
