Boston Utd 0-0 Villa U21: Young guns held by plucky Pilgrims

Harrison

Villa's young guns were held to a goalless draw by Boston United in their second pre-season outing.

It proved to be another useful workout for Gordon Cowans' side, although they couldn't find a way past the plucky Pilgrims at The Jakemans Stadium.

Coach Cowans fielded a similar squad to the one that earned 4-1 win at Boldmere St Michaels on Wednesday, with Jack Grealish and Tomas Zazrivec the only absentees.

The hosts had the first real chance of the game when Jamie McGhee stabbed wide after meeting a cross from the left.

But the claret and blues began to hit their stride. Michael Drennan fired off target on two occasions after being teed up by Daniel Johnson and Callum Robinson respectively.

Robinson crafted another opportunity for Johnson but the midfielder's effort was blocked on the line by Carl Piergianni.

Craig Hill made two good saves in the first period, tipping Stefan Galinski's drive over the bar before getting down low to keep out a backheel from Scott Garner.

The visitors began the second half strongly. Robinson made a surging run down the left but could only drag his shot wide from 18 yards.

Then it was the turn of Boston to have a good spell. A terrific intervention from Lewis Kinsella at the back post prevented Danny Meadows from tapping home, while Piergianni should have done better with a header following a superb ball by McGhee.

And replacement goalkeeper Brad Watkins - who came on for Hill at half-time - dashed out of his goal to thwart Dayle Southwell.

Jerell Sellars carried Villa's main attacking threat in the latter stages of the contest.

The teenage forward cleared the crossbar from long range before forcing Sam Vince into a fine save after meeting Thomas Strain's cross.

But neither side could find a breakthrough in this lively pre-season encounter.
