Texas Tour 2014: FC Dallas ace Luccin hails Cole wizardry

FC Dallas midfielder Peter Luccin hopes that the MLS will soon start to see technical players of the ilk of Joe Cole.

French ace Luccin believes there has been a change in emphasis in the USA development system over the past few years.

The former Paris St Germain star thinks prowess has overtaken power in the list of 'must-haves' when assessing youth players looking to progress in the game in the States.

Luccin believes Cole - a player he has admired from afar for many years - is a standout example of promoting exemplary skill.

He said: "I am looking forward to our game with Villa.

"It's a great, great thing to learn about another concept.

"The Barclays Premier League is totally different to Major League Soccer. It's the technique - and tactically everyone is very good.

"It's one of the best divisions in the world because it is very complex. That is why it is very good for us to face Villa. It's a perfect opportunity to learn about a team like them - to learn their concept allows us to build here in Dallas.

"In the team, I obviously know Joe Cole - a great player and a great name.

"Joe can obviously play out wide or as a No. 10. He is very good - a great player.

"He is very technical and he has a good mentality - and a great name in the world of football.

"Here, in the U.S., we have big boys. We have so many players with muscles and that physicality is the focus.

"But now, the shift has come to where the U.S. is starting to focus on technical players and I think it's a great idea.

"For the U.S. and Major League Soccer, for me and my opinion, it's the best concept to make this country better in the future."

As well as Cole, holding midfielder Luccin also knows all about Villa's standing in the city of Birmingham - after revealing he nearly signed for Blues.

He continued: "Of course, I saw a few games Villa played this past season. I like the team. They're very good.

"As well as Joe Cole, I know their striker Gabby Agbonlahor. He is very fast. I have never played against him but I saw him in action and he's a very dangerous player.

"But, to be fair, Villa as a whole has a good team. It's going to be fun to play against this team.

"Birmingham is a very nice city. I was close to signing with Birmingham City at one point a few years ago actually - they are Villa's enemy.

"So I know the city. It is a great city and, for sure, Villa is a good team."

Luccin is relishing the pre-season friendly - but insists it will feature two teams eager for the win to gain momentum and confidence.

He added: "We want to upset Villa. When we take the field, we have to win. I think we have a team to complete well against Villa.

"No gift. We'll play hard. We'll play with heart and we're at home so we need to win. It's not a friendly game - it's a game."
