Defender Donacien signs new two-year contract
Janoi Donacien has become the latest Villa youngster to commit his future to the club by signing a new two-year contract.
Donacien follows in the footsteps of Gary Gardner and Callum Robinson, who both put pen to paper on new deals earlier this week.
The 20-year-old central defender continued to impress last term as a regular fixture in Villa's U21 side.
His performances caught the attention of manager Paul Lambert, who named him on the bench for the FA Cup clash against Sheffield United and the Barclays Premier League game against Sunderland.
"I am so happy that the club have given me an opportunity to sign for another two years," said Donacien.
"This is the right club for me to keep on progressing. I had a discussion with the manager at the end of the season and he said that hopefully I'd be looking to progress at the club.
"There are a lot of top players at this club who I am hoping to learn from.
"Hopefully I can get a good pre-season under my belt, get a good run-out and continue my progress."
Born in St Lucia, Donacien moved to the UK at a young age and began playing his youth football at Luton.
He joined Villa in 2009, featuring regularly for Tony McAndrew's U18 team before going on to represent the club at reserves and U21 level.
Donacien helped Villa win the Barclays Premier Reserve League South title in 2011-12, while 12 months later he was an integral part of the team that triumphed in the NextGen Series European competition, alongside the likes of Callum Robinson, Jack Grealish and Samir Carruthers.
Now he is keen to follow the lead of Robinson, Grealish and Carruthers by earning a taste of first team football.
"We have got a very healthy, really good group of lads," he added.
"It helps when you've got players like Jack, Callum, Samir and DJ [Daniel Johnson] as we all push each other and try to help each other do our jobs better.
"Callum got a chance in the first team last year and he has set the bar really high because he is a very good player.
"I've been on the fringes of the first team which was good for my progression.
"It is a good step for every young player and it helped me bond with the lads.
"All of the senior lads have been very helpful and it is good to have people encourage you."
