The record books show that Bobby Templeton hit two goals in the 1902-03 season- but his tally might not actually be accurate.

Scottish outside-right Templeton is down as the scorer of Villa's second goal in a 4-2 win against Sheffield United on December 20, 1902.

However, there is actually some real confusion about the strike which helped the claret and blues on their way to a valuable victory on home soil.

That's because a dog had run on to the pitch, causing problems for the players as they continued their engaging and enthralling game.

The report in the 'Aston Villa Chronicles' reads: "William Foulke failed to clear one centre on 35 minutes and Templeton came on and piloted the ball into the net."

The 'Aston Villa Complete Record', however, adds: "It was difficult to tell whether it was the dog or Templeton who actually scored."

Villa finished the campaign in second place on 41 points, one behind eventual champions Sheffield Wednesday. Sheffield United completed the season in fourth spot on 39 points.

Villa actually went into April in eighth place with 19 points, 10 behind leaders Wednesday.

With two points for a victory, Villa knew they would have to win every game and hope - and they very nearly pulled it off.

They picked up wins in six of the last seven matches, the solitary defeat coming during a terrible storm at Anfield when the referee insisted that play must continue despite the conditions.

Meanwhile, Wednesday picked up only three more points during that period. Villa had a better goal average than the Owls and just one more point would have given us the title.

In the event, the claret and blues had to be content with the runners-up spot.

However, Templeton didn't finish the season for Villa. He left Villa for Newcastle in the New Year for a record £400 fee, after making 71 appearances.
