Latin Lions roar to victory in supporters club tournament
The Latin Lions tasted silverware after defeating their counterparts from Man City, Man United, Liverpool and Everton in a top Italian supporters club tournament.
The seven-a-side competition, known as the Italian Connection, saw teams representing 16 British clubs go head-to-head.
The Villa team kicked off with a 3-2 win over their opposite numbers from Man City, Italian Blue Moon.
Further victories over Ipswich Town Italian Branch and Man United's Red Army Italy saw the claret and blues top the group.
The Latin Lions earned a 2-1 quarter-final win over Liverpool Italia before a narrow 1-0 success over Magpies Italy [Newcastle] booked their place in the final.
Villa - led by chairman Stefano Armellini - went on to lift the trophy by defeating Everton Italia 2-0.
Not only did the Latin Lions gain great exposure from the tournament, which was covered by Italy's premier sports paper La Gazzetta dello Sport, they also raised money for Acorns.
The group opted to donate their 600 Euro prize to Villa's official charity partners.
"We are very proud of this achievement because it was very difficult," said chairman Stefano.
"We have a very solid team, with many gifted players, but we are older.
"We have an average age over 40 against teams with average age 22.
"Involving people from all over Italy, the level was very high, and you can imagine that playing six games all in a row under the sun has not been easy for us old boys.
"But we deserved to win with heart, brain, spirit and class, in pure Aston Villa style."
