Man City v Villa stats: Red-hot Weimann backed to star

Villa may have secured their top-flight survival at the weekend but they could yet have a say in where the Barclays Premier League crown ends up when they make the trip to the Etihad Stadium. WhoScored.com preview the encounter with title hopefuls Man City, with Paul Lambert's side having nothing to lose as they look to cause an upset.

Man City know that two home wins will see them regain the Barclays Premier League trophy but Villa will come into the game looking to cause an upset - and not for the first time this season.

Villa's 3-2 win in the reverse fixture has been accompanied by victories over Chelsea and Arsenal, with the claret and blues the only side to have picked up points against each of the top four this season.

Indeed, the 10 points that Villa have amassed against this season's quartet of Champions League qualifiers is at least three more than any other side outside of the top four.

In turn, it's little surprise that Manuel Pellegrini is still claiming that City have a lot to do if they are to regain their crown yet.

Villa's 3-1 win over Hull in their final home outing of the season ended a disappointing run of results and the team will be looking to take that level of performance into the match-up at the Etihad Stadium.

One man that will certainly be looking to carry on from an impressive outing last time out is Andreas Weimann.

The Austrian picked up a WhoScored.com rating of 9.6 courtesy of a brace against Hull at the weekend, earning him a place in the team of the week and the top-rated player gong.

His double, recorded in the space of five first half minutes, came from five attempts in the game, having also created three chances for team-mates and completed two successful dribbles.

Weimann

Having been a mainstay for Villa this term, the 22-year old will have been pleased to be back on the scoresheet, having now matched his nine-goal contribution from the season before, with five goals and four assists thus far.

He'll be hoping to go one better in midweek and emerge as the match-winner against the Citizens for the second time this season.

Weimann scored Villa's third as Lambert's men twice came from behind against City earlier in the season and he's certainly stepped up to the plate against the big sides over the past two seasons.

His strike back in September joins two goals against Man Utd, two against Liverpool and one against Arsenal, with the forward's high-energy style proving a handful for even the best of opponents.

The Midlanders have a decent recent record against their hosts on Wednesday, winning three of the last seven encounters between the two in all competitions, so the visitors certainly shouldn't be written off.

They'll certainly need to stand up to a stern test from a defensive perspective but there were encouraging signs on Saturday.

Villa conceded just two shots on target to Steve Bruce's Hull side and were good value for their win.

With the news that Sergio Aguero will miss the game, Villa will be hoping to stifle the likes of Edin Dzeko instead.

While Pellegrini certainly has a plethora of attacking talent at his disposal, City haven't been as free-scoring when the Argentine has been sidelined, scoring more than a goal per game less on average without their star striker in the starting XI (3.16 to 2.12).

Villa will no doubt be mindful of the fantastic record of the hosts at home this season, and rightly so given that City have dropped points just twice at the Etihad in the ltop-flight.

But Lambert's men have proven to be a thorn in the side of those fighting for the title this season.

The chances of that continuing in midweek should not be overlooked.
