Villa Ladies verdict: Hunt - We must learn lessons quickly

By Liz Owen

Head coach Joe Hunt lamented his side's tendency to concede early goals and admitted they are constantly making the same errors as Villa Ladies slipped to another defeat at Yeovil Town Ladies.

"It's the same old story, and it's getting a bit repetitive now," Hunt acknowledged.

"They're not learning from their mistakes and they keep doing the same things.

"If you don't take your chances you put pressure on yourself, and that's what happened today.

"We missed chances again in front of goal, and then conceded two bad goals.

"It was the same old story in that we gave a good second-half display, but to be fair we controlled the first half as well and probably created more chances.

"But when you give goals away it's always going to be hard work and it's always going to be an uphill battle."

On a positive note, the likes of Bethan Merrick, Maddy Cusack and Abbie Horton were introduced in the second half and Hunt was pleased with the efforts shown by the talented youngsters.

"Bethan and Maddy came on and they've obviously been involved a lot, while Abbie Horton is only 16," he added.

"She's a goal threat and I thought she did well when she came on - she's a willing runner.

"We put Petrovic up top as well so we had to go with three at the back, but we still couldn't get the ball in the net."

Hunt was clearly frustrated with the defeat - particularly with a good opportunity to counter a difficult round of opening fixtures - and he will be looking for an improved response when Villa return to Sherborne in a fortnight for their FA Women's Super League clash with the Glovers.

"We keep talking about mistakes made, we keep showing them on the DVD after the game, and still the same things keep happening," he said.

"They've got to take responsibility. They've got to step up and do the work.

"I know Yeovil manager Sarah Lawler quite well and she's got her team organised - they dropped off us and they killed the spaces - but we've come away with a 2-0 defeat when we should have won comfortably.

"The cup game against Blues a week on Tuesday is going to be really tough.

"They're a quality team and it'll be a typical derby so the players have got to get themselves up for that.

"Then we come back here in the league in two weeks.

"The league is really our bread and butter and when we come back we'll have hopefully improved and learned from what we didn't do today."
