Swansea v Villa preview: Lambert - We must show big desire

Brown

Paul Lambert insists his players must show big desire as they face the clash with Swansea this weekend.

Boss Lambert was impressed with the heart and effort on show against Southampton - and he wants more of the same when his team come up against the Swans.

Performances aren't always full of pace and grace as any season comes to a crunch - with points of the highest importance - but the manager expects another huge industry from his team.

He said: "We will go and try to win. I will never change that philosophy. That's the way we try to play. You pick a team that will try to win.

"Last time we were playing a really good Southampton team. But in the second half, especially, we gave as good as we got.

"It was a battling performance. It was workmanlike and contained a real desire not to get beat. That was a big, big compliment to the lads.

"We need to go to Swansea and have that same desire to go and do it.

"The lads will be well up for it. They won't be nervous. That won't come into it.

"You give them the belief that they will go and win.

"I know we have a goal threat, too. I know we have that attacking ability.

"We played Southampton in the last game - a good side - and you can see how they are up there, definitely.

"We know we're up against a good side in Swansea this weekend but we will go with the confidence to win.

"Gordon and Shay have come in and been really great around and about the place.

"Training has been great this week. The lads have been excellent. It's been lively.

"The lads have been really upbeat but, to be fair, they've always given us everything in their bodies to try and win games and in training they've been really good.

"Regarding that effort and commitment, I think it was evident on Saturday in the way we absolutely gave everything we had to try and get a result.

"The lads threw their bodies on the line and I don't think anybody at the game could question that we tried to win the match. Their commitment to the football club is very high."

Lambert

Lambert is relishing the encounter with the Swans and believes it will be a "very tight" game.

He hinted that a victory over Garry Monk's side would ensure safety for Villa.

He added: "Garry has gone into a football club that has been brought up by Roberto Martinez, Brendan Rodgers and then Michael Laudrup. So he's probably been brought up in that way.

"He will probably find managing different from playing, that's for sure. But he knows the football club.

"They are a good side - and have been for a few years.

"The game will be tight. It always is. I don't think you get an easy game with Swansea. This will be no different.

"We should have won it the last time we were at Swansea on New Year's Day. They scored in the last minute. We should have seen it through. But you know you will have a hard game again this time."

In terms of safety, he added: "If you get one more win, I think everybody knows you're virtually there.

"You never know how many points you'll need but there are a lot of teams that have got to play each other, there are a lot of teams looking to hurt each other and there are still a lot of games to play.

"But if you win one more that should see you through."

TEAM NEWS

Paul Lambert could well be without Joe Bennett as Villa head to Swansea.

Villa face the Swans at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

Bennett is a doubt after injuring his ankle in training this week.

It's another setback for the left-back, who has had a stop-start season with niggling problems.

He had a major back injury in the opening few months before suffering tendinitis in his knee.

Now he will miss the trip to Wales.

Swansea striker Michu has been ruled out with his troublesome ankle injury but manager Garry Monk remains hopeful he will play again this season.

Defender Chico Flores is unavailable to face Villa as he is serving the final game of a two-match suspension.

COLOURS

Villa will be wearing their home kit.

MATCH STATS
