Villa Ladies v Doncaster Belles: Mellor eager for memorable term

Boss Ron Mellor sends Villa Ladies into their first game of the newly-formed Women's Super League season adamant that they will be challenging for the title this term.

Villa Ladies host Doncaster Belles on Wednesday at Sutton Town, kick-off 7.45pm.

Mellor is in confident mood after overseeing intensive training over the past few months.

The manager has been very impressed with what he's seen from the upbeat women and he believes they have what it takes to be a big hit.

After Doncaster Belles, Villa Ladies face Sunderland Ladies and Millwall Lionesses and Mellor insists all three will be up there at the end of the term.

But he says Villa Ladies will be challenging too. It's been a long wait for the team, though.

They finished their previous National League term - a winter division - in May 2013 so it's been almost 12 months in the pipeline before the start of the Super League - a summer division.

He said: "It's been a long time coming - but we are almost there.

"We finished the previous season in fine style, lifting the League Cup - and now it's on to the newly-formed Women's Super League.

"We have all had to be very patient but I feel we have evolved and developed in that time.

"We have worked consistently hard in training and in a series of excellent friendly matches to hone our skills, develop as a team and focus on all things football in preparation for the season.

"Our first opponents, Doncaster Belles, will be very difficult to overcome.

"They defeated us early in pre-season and in doing so, they evicted us from the FA Cup. We are definitely hoping to reverse the result this time.

"The Women's Super League contains good teams and our first three opponents have been tipped to be there when the accolades are distributed at the end of the season. We are going to be there as well.

"We are eager for a memorable season. We want to compete hard, show character, play well and win games. That's our aim."

Villa Ladies v Doncaster Ladies is included in the price of a season ticket - snap up here.

But if you want to come on an ad-hoc basis, it is £3 for adults and £1 concessions.

The venue is Sutton Town, Central Ground, Coles Lane - postcode for SatNav: B72 1NL.
