Striker Benteke to undergo surgery on ruptured achilles tendon

Harrison

Christian Benteke is set to have surgery on his injured achilles tendon in the next 24 hours.

Benteke has travelled to his native Belgium with club doctor Roddy MacDonald and is expected to go under the knife either tonight or tomorrow.

The 23-year-old suffered the ruptured Achilles in training last week and looks set for a spell of at least six months on the sidelines.

"Our doctor is over there today and he's speaking to the surgeon and it's pretty imminent," said manager Paul Lambert.

"He'll get it done either today, tonight or tomorrow.

"Then after that it's the rehab with him so he'll have good days and bad days.

"With a long term injury that's what happens, but he'll be fine.

"When you rupture your Achilles there's not that much there, holding that part of your leg.

"I'm not a medical person but I'm pretty sure they'll just reattach it and let it heal."

Lambert has backed the star striker to knuckle down and stay mentally strong during a difficult period of rehabilitation.

"It all depends on him really," said the Villa boss.

"Everybody is different in how they want to progress and how quick their body heals.

"Looking at Christian and how he is as a pro, he'll knuckle down and work really hard to get back."

Charles N'Zogbia suffered a similar injury last summer and is still striving to regain full fitness.

The Frenchman has been training with the club's development squad in a bid to reach peak condition.

Lambert said the winger is still a little way off being able to cope with the tempo of first-team training.

"His injury was really bad," added the manager.

"He's still really short of match fitness. You can do all the training you want, you can work with fitness lads, but for this level of football you have got to get yourself up to the top level.

"I don't think he's ready for anything like that at the minute but he's training.

"When you're coming to train with the first team it's difficult because of the speed of it and the tempo of it.

"It can put you back if you're not 100% ready for anything. It all depends how the body reacts to different rehab. He's just taken longer to get to match fitness.

"It's not one where he can say you're fit and you're in."
