Man Utd U21 3-0 Villa U21: Old Trafford defeat for young guns

Villa were on the receiving end of a ruthless finishing display from Manchester United in the Barclays U21 Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

James Wilson and Joe Rothwell produced classy finishes in the first half before Saidy Janko powered home the third goal just after the break.

The hosts took control from the first whistle and went close after 12 minutes when Ben Pearson's reverse pass allowed Charni Ekangamene to shoot but he struck his left-foot effort just wide.

But United raced ahead with two well-worked goals in the space of four minutes.

Wilson collected another clever lay-off from Pearson before unleashing an unstoppable 25-yard shot which flew into the top corner on 27 minutes.

Then just past the half-hour mark, a slick United passing move resulted in Ekangamene teeing up Rothwell, who curled a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Villa managed a couple of half chances before the break. A dangerous cross from Jordan Graham had Red Devils keeper Ben Amos backpedalling but he managed to tip it over the bar.

And Callum Robinson brilliantly turned away from his marker and fired a left-foot drive inches wide.

Skipper Daniel Johnson had a great chance to pull one back soon after the restart but he slid his effort wide after meeting Graham Burke's cutback.

Within 60 seconds of Johnson's miss, Janko put the result beyond doubt with another blockbuster strike.

Guillermo Varela motored forward from right-back and produced a cutback for Janko who hammered a shot into the top corner.

Wilson curled a 20-yard effort just past the post for United, while Brad Watkins scrambled across his goal to brilliantly tip away another deflected attempt from the Red Devils attacker.

Villa did produce a few bright moments late in the game although it was too little, too late.

Andras Stieber went for goal from 25 yards but Amos got down to smother the shot.

Johnson blazed over the bar after a neat exchange with full-back Tom Leggett.

And Robinson couldn't keep his close-range header down when Josh Webb fired across the six-yard box.
