Villa v Fulham: 'Mr Consistent' Westwood brimming with confidence

Paul Lambert has hailed Ashley Westwood as Villa's 'Mr Consistent' and insists the midfielder is "brimming with confidence."

Westwood bagged the second goal of his Villa career in last weekend's defeat at Manchester United.

The 24-year-old has been on an upward curve since joining from Crewe Alexandra in August 2012.

And Lambert has been delighted with the way he has progressed since making the big leap from League One to the Barclays Premier League.

"I think he is just getting better," said the Villa boss.

"I think the value for money has been incredible with him.

"We got him for less than a million pounds from Crewe and to do what he is doing and playing in that company, he never looks out of place.

"He has earned the right to be there. He is getting better and better and the confidence is brimming out of him. His consistency level is excellent."

Lambert believes Westwood doesn't always get the praise he deserves for his work in the central ground.

But the manager says there is an art to the midfielder's 'keep it simple' approach.

"As I've said before, a lot of his work probably goes unnoticed," added Lambert.

"But if you look at it from the point of view that we do, his work is vital for our team.

"The way he plays, the game, the way he passes is - he never gives it away, which is a great art.

"He is getting better, there is no two ways about it. He is developing into a really top player."
