Man Utd v Villa preview: Lambert - We're ready for Red Devils

Paul Lambert insists his players are raring to go as they face Man Utd this weekend.

Lambert has been very pleased with the attitude and application of his players in training at Bodymoor Heath this week as they prepare to travel to Old Trafford.

Lambert insists there's "no hangover" from the Stoke defeat.

He accepts Sunday's loss was frustrating but he says his players will aim to bounce back strongly as they face the champions in their own backyard.

He said: "We played well for 20 minutes against Stoke. We carried on from where we left off at the Chelsea game.

"After that, to be fair to Stoke, we were second best. We didn't deserve anything from the game.

"Sometimes you come away thinking 'how did we lose that?' On Sunday, you didn't have to be Einstein to realise we didn't perform well enough to win.

"We were in control and there was no problem. Then we gave away really poor goals.

"Everyone can have a bad day at the office - everybody. We are no different - we are human and we make mistakes like everyone else.

"It was a game where we never performed. If you don't perform at this level, you get beaten.

"Now you take your medicine and put yourself up again.

"We had a chat this week and I told them my feelings on it.

"To be fair, they have trained well. There's no hangover.

"But, as I have said before, we are a team that has to be on it every game or that can happen.

"We fell below the standard we have set over the past few weeks.

"The one thing I've always found, though, is that I always get a response. The lads have always come out and tried to rectify things. I'm pretty sure Saturday will be the same.

"They have risen to the big occasions. This is a great game to go up there and play.

"If you don't want to play in this game, then there's something wrong.

"It's a great football stadium, it has a great history attached to it and there will be a massive crowd.

"You've got to thrive on these sorts of games.

"We can cause them trouble definitely. Our intent is to win the game.

Lambert will come up against David Moyes this weekend, the man chosen to replace Sir Alex Ferguson in the hotseat.

The Red Devils are seventh - 18 points adrift of leaders Chelsea - after fierce rivals Man City inflicted United's sixth home league loss of the season.

Despite these factors, Lambert insists Saturday's encounter will be immensely tough.

He continued: "I was up there the other night to watch them against Man City. To be fair to them, City were fantastic.

"But you're still going to a team with top players.

"Yes they might be having a hard time at the minute. But David is following one of the greatest managers of all-time. That is no mean feat in itself.

"Whoever went in there at the start of the season was always going to find it difficult because they have had incredible success over a 20-plus year period.

"They still have some great, great players there. It's not as if they have become poor players overnight.

"You're probably expecting them to come out firing on all cylinders this weekend but it's our job to try and win and what we can do best is to try and hurt them. That's our intent, to go up there and try and win."

Villa will be backed by a big away following at Old Trafford on Saturday.

This week, claret and blue fans were voted the third nosiest away crowd in the Premier League by sponsors Barclays as part of their 'Thank You' campaign.

Lambert is not surprised by the impressive statistic as he eyes another top vocal performance from the fab following.

He added: "It doesn't shock me at all, not with the following we've got on the road. The away fans on Saturday will go up and make themselves heard, I'm sure of that."
