Buoyant Bennett on prospect of keeping left-back spot

Harrison

Joe Bennett is relishing the battle to hold on to the left-back spot after helping Villa shut out Chelsea's attacking stars.

With on-loan defender Ryan Bertrand ineligible to face his parent club, Bennett was handed a return to the starting line-up for the 1-0 victory over Jose Mourinho's side.

And the former Middlesbrough man made a big contribution as Villa thwarted the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian and Fernando Torres.

Bertrand is available again for Sunday's clash against Stoke but Bennett hopes to have done enough to keep his place.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old was thrilled to play a part in such a memorable occasion for Paul Lambert's side.

"Ryan wasn't able to play for obvious reasons but it was nice to get a game," said Bennett.

"It was a fantastic win. I thought all of the lads were brilliant from start to finish and we fully deserved the three points.

"I don't think Chelsea had many clear cut chances.

"There was one which was handball and it ended up in the back of the net but other than that I don't think they had many chances. I think we coped with the front three quite well.

"I don't think you get much better than Hazard, Oscar and Willian.

"But I think all of us - the back four and the midfield three - coped with them really well."

On the prospect of getting the nod for the Stoke clash, Bennett added: "Ryan will be back next week but you never know what could happen.

"The manager might choose me or he might choose Ryan.

"I'm just trying to keep my head down at the minute and train well but I put in a good performance against Chelsea so that might help."
