Lambert says he's "looking for more" from talented Tonev
Tonev was Lambert's first summer signing as he joined Villa from Lech Posnan in June 2013.
But, after showing glimpses of undoubted skill before the campaign began - particularly in the match against Malaga - he has been used sparingly in top-flight action.
He has been in and out of the team during the campaign, starting eight games and also coming on in 10 others as a substitute.
Lambert is still very hopeful of seeing real progress from Tonev in claret and blue.
The boss believes the 24-year-old wideman has all the attributes to be successful in B6.
He said: "You are looking for more from Aleks.
"He has the attributes - speed, skill and two feet.
"Everything is there for him. It's just taking him longer to adjust with a lot of things.
"He has all the things there, it's about getting them together.
"He has blistering, incredible pace and two good feet. You wouldn't know which his best foot was.
"It's taking him longer to adjust but you always know that might happen."
Lambert believes Tonev will have been in regular contact with countryman Stiliyan Petrov as he bids to get used to the nuances of life in England.
He added: "I'm pretty sure Aleks will have spoken to Stiliyan about it.
"But I haven't spoken to Stiliyan myself for a number of weeks because he's busy doing what he's doing. But I'm pretty sure he'll have called him."
