Villa launch new app on huge WeChat mobile platform


Villa have launched a new app on the mega WeChat mobile platform.

WeChat is a text and voice message communication service, developed by media giant Tencent in China - boasting over 600 million users worldwide.

WeChat - a revelation since launch in January 2011 - is the fifth most-used smartphone app across the planet, with over 300 million users in China alone.

Popularity is increasing at a rapid rate as the mobile social network takes the world by storm.

It is growing five times faster than Facebook and looks set to be the primary instant messaging app in the world.

Villa have become the fifth Barclays Premier League club to launch a WeChat app after Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Other content providers include Starbucks, DELL, Nike, LeBron James and Lionel Messi.

The app is available on Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Symbian platforms - and you can download it in the App Store for iOS, Google Play Store for Android, BlackBerry App World and Marketplace for Windows Phone.

WeChat is very similar to WhatsApp, in that you can communicate with each other rapidly via text or voice message and share pictures, video and location.

But there is also the opportunity to subscribe to the Villa app within WeChat, which provides a news service and video/audio updates on life in B6.

You can even type in a player's name and you will immediately be provided with the latest news regarding that player.

Russell Jones, Villa's Head of Marketing said: "We have been really pleased with the rapid growth of our Sina Weibo and YouKu accounts and sincerely hope our new WeChat page will receive the same level of interest and engagement.

"We guarantee fans who subscribe our very best behind the scenes content and regular competitions."

Benteke

The club's embracing of WeChat follows big movement from Villa in the Chinese market.

Our new Sina Weibo account - the Chinese equivalent of Twitter - has charged to a whopping 130,000 followers.

Villa post 11 items per day, a good level of engagement, with content ranging from news stories, pictures, promotions, video footage with subtitles and competitions.

Villa also have a Youku channel - the second biggest video sharing website in the world behind YouTube - which also continues to go from strength to strength with 22,000 subscribers.

But Villa have also joined the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Man Utd in having their exclusive video content appear on multiple media platforms in Asia.

Chinese New Year messages are usually only published on club channels.

But this year, our video content has gone global, with big companies like Now TV, Sohu Sports, GDTV and Sina Sports using our internally-produced material.

The likes of Ron Vlaar, Gabby Agbonlahor, Brad Guzan and Christian Benteke recorded New Year messages for fans in Asia.

And they also wrote their names in traditional Chinese calligraphy using authentic brushes and paper aswell as signing claret and blue shirts bearing their surnames in Chinese.

This content was published - and praised - by a plethora of important media outlets in the Far East.
