Villa v Norwich preview: Lambert - Fans can roar us to victory

Brown

Paul Lambert believes the claret and blue fans can roar Villa to victory against Norwich.

Lambert has talked consistency, since arriving in B6, of the strong bond needed between supporters and players in order to be successful.

He reiterated that potent point as he spoke to the press on the eve of the Canaries clash, which kicks off at 4.30pm on Sunday.

Lambert knows the players must spark the fans with good football but he also believes the supporters have a role to play if there are sticky moments in the match.

He said: "The fans are vital, no doubt about. We need the supporters.

"They will be right behind us on Sunday, I am sure of that. But we have to give them something too, that's important.

"The Villa fans have been great since I have been here. Yes, you get things that don't go right - that's normal - but we need them, especially at home.

"People ask whether it's the players who lift the fans or the fans who lift the players. It's a bit of both.

"You need them when things aren't going well, to stay behind the side, because that will help them.

"You need them to roar us on. You can see the difference when they're right behind you. The lads are free and that's what you're hoping for on Sunday."

As Lambert correctly pointed out, the players need to perform, first and foremost, to get a positive reaction from the fans.

He knows that the approach of his team will be vital in achieving this - and he's very firm in terms of what he wants this weekend.

He continued: "We were 2-0 down against West Brom after eight minutes. Then all of a sudden, things clicked into place. We got right in amongst it after that.

"That's the way we have to play. We can't play slow football. We have to have that tempo.

"That keeps the crowd right on it with you.

"If we play with that tempo, we will be a match for anyone. Not just Norwich."

Weimann

Villa, of course, come into this game with the Canaries on the back of a 1-0 away defeat to Newcastle, a victory for the Geordies which was secured deep in stoppage time.

Lambert admits that was a "sore one" to take but he insists that the mood in camp is good and the belief is there to go and get a result this weekend.

He added: "It was a sore one to take because of the way things happened. I thought we deserved something from it because of the way we played.

"We lost a poor goal because of a couple of errors which weren't good enough. But it terms of the way we played overall, there wasn't much wrong with it.

"We needed to score when we were on top in the first half. We had dominance and chances.

"I'm not too despondent in terms of the way we are playing. We are creating chances. We just need someone to take them.

"Like anything, if you keep dwelling on defeat, it will take you under. We have kept them upbeat this week and they will be ready for Sunday's game against Norwich.

"I view it as another game. If you go about prioritising one game over another, you fall flat on your face. It's just another game. It doesn't matter who we're playing, we have to go and try to win.

"If we keep playing the way we have of late and keep that type of football we have a chance of winning. We have a good record against them. We want to keep that going.

"There are 11 games to go and we are three points off 10th place. People are talking about West Ham being clear but we are three points away. One or two results catapult you up."

MATCH STATS

That loss was inflicted by Paul Lambert - Canaries boss at the time - on the last day of the 2011-12 campaign.

Norwich have won just four of their 32 top-flight away games under Chris Hughton.

No player has had more headed shots [20] or scored more headed goals [4] in the Premier League season than Christian Benteke.

Norwich's only Premier League win at Villa Park was their first trip there in 1992, where Mike Walker's side won 3-2.

Robert Snodgrass has been involved in each of Norwich's last three goals, scoring twice and assisting once.

Villa are four points better off this campaign [28] than they were at this stage last season [24], but have lost as many games [13].
