Gaffer's verdict: Lambert - We didn't deserve to lose that
Paul Lambert said his team deserved a draw after watching them concede a last-minute goal to Newcastle.
Lambert felt one point would have been fair reward for the efforts of his side, who dominated the first half on Tyneside.
He accepted that the Geordies came back strong after the break but insisted it was an even game overall.
What annoyed the boss most of all was the fact the late sickener came as a result of a defensive error from his own side.
He said: "It's a hard one to take, very much so.
"I thought we deserved a draw. I don't think we deserved to lose it. I thought a draw would probably have been fair.
"We were great in the first half. We had chance after chance and looked threatening.
"At the end I didn't think anyone was going to score.
"Newcastle had a bit of pressure in the second half but I didn't think there was much in it.
"I thought we dominated the first half. We were very good in the first half and looked a threat.
"We might have scored but it never materialised.
"It was a defensive error from ourselves and we have been punished. You don't lose a goal with 30 seconds to go. The disappointing thing is that we had the ball.
"Defensively we should have knocked it up the pitch and then the game is finished. You kick the ball as far as you can up the pitch.
"We got away with it when Ron tried to beat the lad on the line. That happens and then you think it's going to be okay.
"You can't take anything away from the lad after the finish but we should have seen the game through.
"It's a right hard place to play and you can't take a chance. We took too many chances."
Lambert is still confident with 11 games remaining.
He continued: "If you look at the league from 10th down, everyone is in it.
"There are a lot of games to go. There will be plenty of toing and froing. It will be a low tally [that stays up] with the way the league is. But if we keep looking after ourselves we will be alright. We have been through it so we know what it's like.
"The lads had belief to come and play like that up here in Newcastle. You take a lot from that. If we keep playing like that, we will win more than not. Now you go and try to win the next one."
