Guzan: I want to emulate hero status of legend Spink

Brown

Brad Guzan says he's keen to earn a reputation as illustrious as Nigel Spink in the coming years with Villa.

Spink, of course, made more appearances for the club than any other goalkeeper and there were some historic moments during the course of his 460 games in claret and blue.

He will be forever remembered as the hero of Rotterdam, coming on as sub in the European Cup final of 1982 and keeping the mighty Bayern Munich at bay.

He was also the keeper in the club's first-ever Premier League match - a 1-1 draw with Ipswich in August 1992.

And in the final game of his 19-year career here, he was an outfield player when he replaced the injured Ian Taylor in the last minute at QPR in December 1995.

As well as the top personality and great saves, Spink is held in high esteem for his longevity with the club.

It's something Guzan respects and wants to emulate.

His admiration for Spink was brought firmly into focus when the pair met at Bodymoor this month.

They both had to model their hands for a cast display which will appear on our stadium tours experience in the coming weeks.

Guzan was thrilled to meet Spink.

He said: "It was fantastic to meet Spinky. It was an honour to get to meet him because he's held in such high esteem at this football club.

"He was very complimentary about me when we chatted and that was really nice to hear from someone like him, who's seen it and done it.

"I have a long way to go in order to continue to prove myself and get to his level.

"One day, I hope to be as respected as him. It would be nice to be seen in the same light as him.

"I have only just started here really. It's just the start of my contributions to the club."
