Villa 4-3 West Brom verdict: Lambert on remarkable comeback

Brown

Paul Lambert admits he felt absolutely horrendous after eight minutes and immensely proud after ninety minutes as Villa won a seven-goal derby against West Brom.

Villa were 0-2 early on before leading 3-2 through efforts from Andi Weimann, Leandro Bacuna and Fabian Delph with a blockbuster.

Baggies levelled just before the break through Youssouf Mulumbu but the hosts had the final say when Christian Benteke calmly slotted home the winner in the second half.

Lambert says he was shell-shocked at the start but delighted for the team - and the fabulous fans - as they earned the bragging rights over Albion in the end.

He said: "It was great to watch for the fans but not for me!

"We were two-down after eight minutes. To be fair, the first goal from West Brom was a fabulous strike. We couldn't do anything about that.

"With the second goal, it was disappointing because we switched off at a free-kick. Fabian does his best to stop the cross.

"But you find yourselves two-down. That's hard enough in any game but in a derby match it doubles because of the importance to the crowd.

"But the turnaround was absolutely fantastic. What a performance that was!

"To turn it around - and the way we did it - was absolutely fantastic.

"I have confidence in them. You never lose faith in them, that's for sure.

"It was important we kept level-heads and tried to get back into it. We showed a lot of maturity in doing that. They grew up an awful lot there.

"To do it against your rivals shows the magnitude of it. I thought they were great.

"You have to hold your nerve. We did that. We were fantastic.

"The disappointing one was the goal just behind half-time. Our tails were up. We were going great at 3-2. They scored and then anything can happen. But the turnaround was unbelievable.

"I know what it means to the supporters. They will have that feeling now until the next derby comes around. They have the bragging rights. I am delighted for them."

Lambert hopes that amazing result will give his side a boost on their own patch now as they keep Southampton in their sights.

He added: "I am sure it will give them confidence.

"Our form since the start of the year has been good. The away form is there for everyone to see.

"If you reverse our home form and away form, nobody would question what's going on.

"Scoring four goals will certainly please people.

"Look at the table now. There's only five points between us and Southampton. They are sitting ninth.

"You just keep going. They are the next team above us. Five points is better that what it was."

Lambert also revealed he will assess Gabby Agbonlahor ahead of the Everton game this weekend.
