Liverpool 2-2 Villa: Proud Vlaar - We took the game to them

Ron Vlaar was delighted with the way Villa executed their game plan against Liverpool - but felt they deserved to leave Anfield with all three points.

Vlaar praised the manner in which the claret and blues took the game to Brendan Rodgers' Champions League chasers in the early stages of Saturday's 2-2 draw.

And the skipper also took heart from the performance of the back four, who kept one of the Barclays Premier League's most potent strike forces quiet for long periods.

But he admits the timing of Daniel Sturridge's goal - which cut Villa's lead to 2-1 just before the break - proved crucial.

"We really deserve credit for the way we played and the way that we pressed them because they couldn't play their game," said Vlaar.

"We all did what we had to do and we should have been maybe three or four up.

"Everybody did very well for us and did what was asked.

"We scored twice and I think we should have scored three or four times but to go 2-0 up was very good.

"Unfortunately they scored just before half time and that helped them back in the game.

"But we didn't panic and even after their second goal from a penalty they didn't really get many chances overall in the whole game.

"We had the best chances. I'm happy with the point but I think we deserved more and I'm a little bit disappointed that we didn't take the three points."
