Villa v Swansea: Guzan - Time to show that we are big characters

Brad Guzan is confident Villa's fortunes will change very quickly - but insists it is time for the team's "big characters" to come to the fore.

The American goalkeeper admits the stoppage-time defeat to Crystal Palace on Boxing Day came as a hammer blow.

The late strike from Dwight Gayle condemned the claret and blues to a fourth straight defeat.

But Guzan sees Saturday's clash against Swansea as a perfect opportunity to turn things around.

"That is the beauty of the Premier League and football in general," he said.

"It is never an easy game. It is never an easy task and it is going to take some big characters from our point of view to step on to the pitch and find a way to get a result.

"It was not the way we wanted to finish the Palace game and not the result we wanted to go into the game.

"It was a bit of a blow but the good thing about the Christmas period is we can turn it around rather quickly because we have a game on Saturday.

"We have to put this behind us and find a way to come out on Saturday and get a result."

Guzan says the players are determined to put on a big performance in B6 - for the fans and for their own professional pride.

"As professional footballers every time you step on to the pitch you want to win the game, regardless of who you are playing," he said.

"There is a determination - the fact that we want to make things right, do it for ourselves and for the fans.

"We sense that ability to go and get a result and we need to do that on Saturday."

Guzan said it is important for the players, staff and supporters to stick together in a bid to end the recent run of defeats.

He believes the team can draw inspiration from some of their early-season displays.

"There is no doubt in my mind we'll have a response," the keeper added.

"Yes we are going through a bad run of result but it doesn't make us a bad team.

"We are still the same team that won away at the Emirates and have picked up other positive results along the way so we'll dust ourselves off and go again and find a way to get a win on Saturday."
