Wolves U21 0-2 Villa U21: Donacien/Stieber earn derby victory
Villa U21s rounded off 2013 in style with a deserved away win at Wolves.
Janoi Donacien and Andras Stieber got the goals at Bucks Head as Gordon Cowans' side produced an accomplished display.
And, in a further boost, Gary Gardner stepped up his bid for match fitness by playing an hour of this Barclays U21 Premier League clash.
The claret and blues edged a tight first period which produced very few clear-cut chances.
The opener came from an unlikely source in Donacien, who leapt to head Callum Robinson's precise left-wing cross past Wayne Hennessey on 14 minutes.
Until then, the two sides had done a good job in restricting each other.
The closest Wolves came in the early stages was a low drive from Kristian Kostrna which crept just wide of the target.
Full-back Lewis Kinsella tested Hennessey with a thunderbolt 35-yard effort but the Wales international keeper did well to hold.
Villa went on the front foot at the start of the second period and Hennessy did well to keep out a stinging effort from Robinson soon after the restart.
Four minutes into the half, the visitors doubled their advantage with a superb counter-attack.
Some space opened up for Stieber on the left and the Hungarian motered into the box before powering an effort into the bottom corner.
Stieber could have had a second but, after stretching to reach Michael Drennan's cross from the left, Hennessey made an instinctive block.
Wolves came on stronger in the final stages although young forward Eusebio Bancessi was wasteful with several opportunities.
Villa's Brad Watkins got down to tip away a Zeli Ismail drive late on to ensure a clean sheet for his team.
