Villa v Man Utd: Big Ron - Subduing Rooney is the key
Ron Atkinson believes Villa can beat Man Utd - as long as they can subdue Wayne Rooney.
Big Ron famously managed both clubs - Villa from 1991-95 and Utd from 1981-86.
And he believes Paul Lambert's men have a good chance of defeating the Red Devils, if they can handle the player he has called "the outstanding English talent."
He said: "Villa Park - other than Old Trafford - has been over the past number of years United's favourite ground. They have had some great results here.
"I think this is the best chance Villa will have of beating United for a long time. It's been a while - 1995 in fact.
"They will have to play well though, that's a given.
"The result at Southampton was terrific. I then thought they'd see Fulham off, which wasn't meant to be.
"The home form isn't great. But it still offers a great chance.
"United's confidence isn't the highest. I have seen them play a lot and the last two times I have watched them and they are definitely short of confidence.
"But the big thing for them is that they have Rooney coming back. To me, he is the outstanding English talent.
"Of course, United have had one or two comebacks against Villa over the years. But if they can subdue Rooney, they have a very, very good chance.
"I am looking forward to it. It was a fixture I loved. I loved it when I was manager at Villa and when I was boss at Utd too. It's always a good fixture and I am sure this latest one will be the same."
