Lambert: Battler Herd is always up for the challenge

Brown

Paul Lambert picked out Chris Herd for praise after the 2-0 loss to Fulham.

Despite the frustrating defeat at Craven Cottage, Lambert was pleased to see the versatile Aussie ace back involved in first team matters.

Defender Herd, who can also play in midfield, had been absent all season before this encounter due to a series of niggling injuries.

But he was back in the first XI in this capital clash after Ron Vlaar was ruled out with a calf problem.

Antonio Luna was also missing with injury so Nathan Baker went to left-full-back with Herd slotting into the centre of defence alongside Ciaran Clark.

Lambert spoke of Herd's all-action approach and his delight at having him back.

He said: "Chris did well.

"I can't argue with that performance. His game was good.

"He never missed a header. He was always up for the challenge.

"I am really pleased he's back."

Lambert gave little away when quizzed about the fitness problems of Vlaar and Luna, aswell as Libor Kozak who also missed the Cottagers match through injury.

The manager said all three would be assessed ahead of the Man Utd encounter.

He continued: "We will see how they are in the week. We will monitor them next week and see how they are."

Fabian Delph will miss the Red Devils game after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season at Fulham.

But Lambert said that's the price you pay for Delph's high-energy approach.

He added: "It's frustration but that's the way he plays the game. He will miss it. But it's someone else's chance."
