Hull 0-0 Villa match report: Stalemate at the KC Stadium

Bishop

Villa maintained their record of not having conceded a goal to Hull City in Barclays Premier League matches but this time had to settle for a point against a Tigers outfit who have made such a positive start to the season.

The latest meeting between the sides at the KC Stadium was full of enterprise and attractive football from both teams, yet ultimately very few clear-cut chances.

Both Gabby Agbonlahor and Karim El Ahmadi forced home keeper Allan McGregor into good saves, but Brad Guzan was barely troubled, apart from parrying Tom Huddlestone's stinging drive just before the interval.

Fabian Delph, who was so dominant in midfield throughout the contest, created an early chance when he outwitted Huddlestone before delivering a deep cross from the right.

Although the ball was partially cleared, it fell to Andi Weimann, but too quickly for the Austrian striker to get in a telling shot.

In contrast, Libor Kozak had plenty of time to unleash a powerful right-foot drive a couple of minutes later, only for his effort to strike an opponent on the edge of the penalty area and deflect for a corner.

The fit-again Agbonlahor was next to try his luck, sending a 20-yarder just too high following a good move down the left.

But in the 15th minute Villa were grateful to Leandro Bacuna when he superbly diverted Danny Graham's low cross from the right to deny Stephen Quinn what looked a certain goal.

Then Ron Vlaar performed a similar rescue act, just managing to flick the ball off Graham's foot as the former Swansea City marksman looked to convert a dangerous cross from the right.

If those were two let-offs, though, McGregor was the first keeper to be tested, tipping away Agbonlahor's low drive at full stretch in the 21st minute.

Weimann was also unfortunate when his goal-bound shot struck a defender and cannoned to safety.

Ashley Westwood was next to test the home defence, drilling his free-kick low and hard after Agbonlahor had been brought down by Liam Rosenior, but Hull managed to clear before Villa's forward could capitalise on a promising situation.

On the stroke of half-time, Guzan made his first save of any note, parrying a stinging 25-yard drive from Huddlestone - and the American keeper was given a rousing reception at the start of the second half by Hull fans appreciative of his loan spell on Humberside in 2011.

Agbonlahor was close to breaking the deadlock in the 53rd minute, the striker firing just wide of the left-hand post after Bacuna's forceful run and pass had enabled Weimann to cut the ball back invitingly from the bye-line.

A couple of minutes later Vlaar cleared from the goalmouth after Sone Aluko's free-kick had caught Villa momentarily off guard, before the lively Bacuna again got forward at the other end to fire wide.

After Ciaran Clark sent a header wide, El Ahmadi twice went close in a matter of minutes.

First his 30-yard shot drive was well held by McGregor, then he exchanged passes with Weimann before hitting a powerful effort which hit a defender and went out for a corner.

In the 90th minute, El Ahmadi burst through the middle for another decent shot which McGregor again held firmly, before sub Aleksandar Tonev dragged low left-footer wide of the far post in stoppage time.

Hull City: McGregor; Rosenior, Faye, Davies, Figueroa; Elmohamady (Meyler 85), Livermore, Huddlestone, Quinn (Boyd 69); Aluko (Sagbo 69), Graham. Unused subs: Harper, Bruce, McShane, Proschwitz.

Villa: Guzan; Bacuna, Vlaar, Baker, Luna; El Ahmadi, Westwood (Tonev 74), Delph; Weimann, Kozak, Agbonlahor (Bowery 74). Unused subs: Steer, Baker, Bennett, Herd, Sylla.
