Monday media watch [30.09.13 AM]: Paper reaction to City win

Birmingham Mail: Paul Lambert reckons his Villa side proved they are not a one-man team by securing their first Premier League victory without Christian Benteke in thrilling style against Manchester City. Lambert has never subscribed to the theory that the claret and blues are overly-dependent on the Belgian talisman and the boss was delighted other players took the plaudits on Saturday.

Birmingham Mail: Brad Guzan's play-making punt up the pitch for Villa's winning goal was "brilliant vision" and "not a long ball", according to Paul Lambert. Guzan grabbed an assist for Andi Weimann's decisive goal when Libor Kozak failed to touch his hefty kick and Weimann rapidly rolled the ball past Manchester City keeper Joe Hart.

Birmingham Mail: Leandro Bacuna has revealed he had to convince his captain to let him take the free-kick that set Villa on the path to victory. Bacuna gave the claret and blues the belief to go on and beat title-chasing Manchester City when he made it 2-2 with a sublime set-piece.

The Sun: Ron Vlaar was chuffed that Aston VIlla proved they could win without Christian Benteke. Top-scorer Benteke is out of action with a hip injury. But Villa's famous victory over Manchester City showed they are no one-man band.

Daily Star: Weimann's winner was a triumph for quick-thinking and bravery as City were caught flat-footed with the clock starting to run down. They had not quite recovered from Leandro Bacuna's beautiful curling free-kick equaliser when the livewire Austrian struck. City had been on the attack when keeper Brad Guzan spotted an opportuinty and thumped a long kick upfield. It sailed over Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic, presenting Weimann with a fairly scary one-on-one with Joe Hart. The massive City keeper raced out to meet it but Weimann put the thoughts of being disemboweled to one side, nipped the ball past him and shepherded it home. Minutes early Bacuna had equalised with a free-kick that had a whiff of David Beckham about it.

Mirror: Ron Vlaar reckons Aston Villa's dramatic victory proves they do not rely solely on Christian Benteke. They were without their injured leading marksman for the visit of Manchester City.

Daily Express: Twice Villa recovered from a goal down, testimony to their team spirit, but also an indictment on City who should have had this game wrapped and packaged before there was any danger of a comeback.

Independent: The transformation of Villa in the space of 45 minutes could turn out to be the most significant of Paul Lambert's term in charge. There was a season of last season's trauma returning. The losses to Liverpool and Newcastle in the previous league games at Villa Park plus the 4-0 hosing at the hands of Spurs had forced an uncomfortable check on the positive away days at Arsenal and Norwich.

Daily Telegraph: This was undoubtedly one of Lambert's finest result and all the more vital as it was achieved without their talisman Christian Benteke. The Belgian international will miss the next three weeks with a hip injury but the fact is this was Lambert's first Premier League win without him underlined his importance. Nobody could have predicted this victory, their first at home this season, at half-time but Lambert will travel to Hull City next weekend in confident mood.
