Villa 3-2 Man City: Vlaar - Home crowd gave us so much energy
Ron Vlaar says the positive energy from the claret and blue faithful spurred Villa on to their first home win of the campaign.
Vlaar was quick to pay tribute to the Villa Park crowd for their role in helping Paul Lambert's team topple title-chasing Manchester City.
The 34,063-strong crowd raised the roof as Villa twice came from behind to record a famous victory over one of the favourites for the Barclays Premier League crown.
And skipper Vlaar said the home fans helped the team dig deep against Manuel Pellegrini's men.
"You could feel that happiness in the stands because they kept us going and we had so much energy, it was amazing," he said.
"I am really proud and I think everybody is proud. We worked really hard to get the result and to make sure of our first home win.
"Coming back from a goal behind twice and to win at the end it was unbelievable - really, really great.
"To win against Man City at home is not easy but the gaffer always says on any given day you can beat them and this was the day."
Vlaar - who played alongside Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker in a back three - felt Villa did well to contain City until Yaya Toure's opener just before half time.
But he hailed the resilience shown by the players to fight back and bring to an end the recent home hoodoo.
"The first half was not easy but you know you are playing against a team who will have a lot of possession and I think we defended really strong," added the Dutchman.
"You know they are going to get chances because they have the quality.
"But to come back from a goal behind twice is unbelievable because everybody was starting to talk about us not winning at home and stuff like that.
"We had a clean sheet last week which was great and now our first home win. I think everybody is very happy."
