Manager on Monday: That winning goal could give Weimann lift-off
Paul Lambert thinks Andi Weimann's winner against Man City could give his season lift-off.
Lambert reacted indignantly in the pre-Newcastle press conferences to comments about Weimann's lack of goals in the opening weeks of the season.
Villa boss Lambert pointed to Weimann's many positive traits that add depth to the team - honesty, quality, effort and bravery.
And he told the media that he had every faith that Weimann would score sooner rather than later and have a good campaign in claret and blue.
Weimann scored the vital goal against Man City and Lambert continued his backing for the star striker, who played through the middle with Libor Kozak in the absence of Christian Benteke.
He said: "It could lift off his season.
"The thing with Andi is I know what I'm going to get every time.
"His statistics for work-rate are right up there, they are unbelievable.
"He's a young boy and he's going to make mistakes. But his desire? He's always a threat too.
"He had to be quick on the winning goal to get to it. But he also had to be brave.
"Andi has been excellent."
Lambert also hailed the performance - and progress - of Leandro Bacuna.
Lambert was thrilled with the fabulous free-kick but also the right-sided star's all-round game throughout the 90 minutes.
He added: "Leandro takes those free-kicks in training. Sometimes he hits them and they go like that.
"He's still a young lad with so much to learn. But he's been excellent in the last few games.
"He can play right-back. He's very versatile. I thought his all-round game was excellent."
