Lambert encouraged by winger Albrighton's return to action

Paul Lambert was able to take the bright performance of returning winger Marc Albrighton as a plus point from Villa's Capital One Cup defeat to Tottenham.

Albrighton made his first appearance since the FA Cup tie against Ipswich on January 5, after battling back from a second broken metatarsal in the space of 12 months.

And although the Tamworth-born winger couldn't prevent his side exiting the League Cup, he showed plenty of endeavour against a strong Spurs side.

Lambert - who was forced to make seven changes because of a mounting injury list - took comfort from the efforts of Albrighton and several other squad players.

Asked about the 23-year-old's performance, Lambert said: "I was encouraged, very much so.

"I thought Marc's performance was really pleasing. He hasn't played a lot of football at all. I thought he did great.

"It just proves that if you get an amount of injured, you need everybody. He certainly played well.

"I thought him and Joe Bennett did well. It was good that Yacouba Sylla played because he hasn't played for a while.

"I thought Nathan Baker was excellent too. There were a lot of pluses. If you look at the Spurs team - and the bench - it's powerful. I don't think there were four goals in that."
