Gaffer's verdict: Lambert miffed with penalty decision

Brown

Paul Lambert bemoaned the penalty appeal that was dismissed as his side went out of the Capital One Cup to Tottenham.

Lambert watched on as Nicklas Helenius had his shorts pulled down in the box, only for referee Jon Moss to wave away calls for a spot-kick.

Lambert was shocked at the decision, which came at a delicate point in the game.

He said: "We were still in the game at 0-1. I thought a big moment was the penalty. But that's football.

"I don't think anyone could believe he wasn't pulled back.

"It's the first time I have seen something like that happen. I can't say too much.

"I don't think anyone could believe that. It's the first time I have seen that.

"We started the second half well. We played two lads up top.

"I thought we did pretty decent in the second half. You have to hope you get these sorts of decisions.

"Does it matter if he's got a shot in? A similar thing happened with Gabby at Arsenal. The referee waited and pulled it back for a penalty.

"Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. But I have not seen that before."

Tottenham went on to win the third round encounter 0-4 but Lambert didn't think that was a fair reflection of the contest.

He added: "I don't think there were four goals in that.

"I don't think it was four. I thought that was a bit harsh on us.

"Even at 0-2 we were in the game and had a lot of the ball. We were trying to create.

"The big moment was the penalty decision."
