Villa v Tottenham preview: Lambert - I trust everyone to perform

Brown

Paul Lambert will send out a much-changed side to face Tottenham but the message will be the same - go out and win.

Lambert has been forced to rest several players who have starred thus far in the Barclays Premier League, the likes of Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke, Fabian Delph and Antonio Luna all looking likely to miss out.

But Lambert says he trusts every player in his squad to perform so he has no worries or concerns about mixing up his line-up for the encounter, sponsored by Citrus Group.

Lambert accepts that bringing in several fringe players will be good for their development but he's not looking solely at that.

He wants them to get game-time, sure, but, more importantly, he wants them to garner a result for the club.

He said: "I trust everyone. That's the beauty of it.

"I trust all of them to perform. If one is injured, someone must come in and step up to the plate.

"But I trust them. That's a great thing. I believe in them to give me everything they have got.

"Saturday epitomised that. We had injuries before and lads played. We took some off for injuries and the ones who came on did great for us.

"I have to protect these players from being injured more so than what they already are.

"Some are kicks, which is normal. Some are strains which you can't take a chance on. That's part and parcel of football. Some lads will come in and cope with it all.

"I need everybody. I have always said that. You're hoping the lads step up. That's what I am looking for.

"It's a good chance for some of the lads. But it's important to the club because you want to try and get through. That's important.

"It's okay bringing people in and thinking they're going to blood themselves but you want to get through. Any team you pick have to go out and try to win.

"You can't get away from trying to win a game of football. Whoever plays know they have to try and win."

Lambert hailed the quality in the ranks at Tottenham and accepts it will be interesting when the line-ups are announced, with both managers making changes for the clash.

He believes that regardless of who plays for the White Hart Lane outfit, they will be extremely strong.

That doesn't stop Lambert aiming to knock out the visitors.

He added: "You don't know what team Tottenham will use because of the amount of players they have. They can mix and match. They do it in the Europa League too. We have to combat that.

"You're in Europe because you're a good side. They have bought in an abundance of players - and good players not average ones. They are top players.

"They are a right top side. Everyone knows that. They are right up there in the league aswell.

"But as long as you're in something, you go in to win it. I am a great believer in that.

"How far a cup competition takes you? You need a bit of luck in cup competition football. We have to try and get a bit of luck plus play well."
