Manager on Monday: Lambert interested in points not shutouts

Brown

Paul Lambert was delighted for his brave backline after they secured a clean sheet in the 1-0 at Norwich.

But he insists points are far more important than shutouts as he promised to stay faithful to his attacking principles.

Lambert says he'd be barmy to not want defensive resilience but he stresses he'd be more than happy for his side to "score one more than the other team" each week.

He said: "I'd rather go and win a game than sit back and people coming at us all the time.

"We try to play attacking football and if we can get a goal more than the other team then I'll take it.

"It's great for the back lads to get a clean sheet. They've worked ever so hard for it and they're delighted.

"I'm bothered about keeping clean sheets, I want to do that, but I also want to give it a go and go and try and win games.

"The players I've got in the side illustrate that. We've got really quick lads who will create chances.

"Every time I've been with Aston Villa our team always creates things and always has a chance."

Lambert was thrilled with the three points at Carrow Road, especially when you consider how many players played through the pain barrier.

The likes of Gabby Agbonlahor and Antonio Luna weren't fully fit but still gave their all for the cause.

Now it's case of patching a few of the lads up for the Capital One Cup clash with Tottenham on Tuesday.

He added: "We'll just crack on to the next one.

"We've got another tough one on Tuesday and again on Saturday.

"We've played really hard teams in this opening spell. Three of the ones you think are going to be round about it in Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool and we've got two more tough ones.

"The main one is Saturday. We'll do our best to try to get through the Tottenham tie.

"This one was really pleasing because I knew there were one or two knocks there.

"Gabby only trained the later part of the week, so did Luna. These are two big players for us and they wanted to give it a go."
