Westwood exclusive: Fans now have a proper Villa team to support!

Ashley Westwood insists Villa are a proper team now - inspired by motivated manager Paul Lambert.

Westwood says the improvements have been made from learning the lessons of the previous campaign and adding quality to the claret and blue ranks.

Westwood was optimistic for the future campaign when he saw the desire and hunger in camp during pre-season training.

But that buoyancy has only increased after the first three games of the season, with Villa going toe-to-toe with big-guns Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Pundits were shocked by the tightness of those matches but Westwood certainly wasn't.

He is adamant Villa have the quality to compete with any team - and the character to recover from setbacks.

The midfielder says that comes from the leadership of boss Lambert, who encourages his players to strive week-after-week.

He said: "You can see the never-say-die attitude. Every member of the squad buys into what is happening here - we're all in together and fighting for each other.

"You can see training - it's 100 miles per hour at times - and in the matches too.

"We have so much energy. We worked hard in pre-season. It got us ready for the season physically.

"We have started the campaign well. Yes, we have lost two games. But it's nice to be disappointed with three points from three tough, tough games.

"We were 1-0 down in the first 10 minutes at Arsenal and we had that mentality of not knowing when we're beaten. We will never, ever give in! It's not in our DNA to do that.

"It was the same against Chelsea. We were 2-1 down and we were still pressing hard to get back into the game in the dying moments after dominating the second half.

"Against Liverpool - after a tough week - we were pushing hard after the break. I thought we should have got something from Chelsea and Liverpool.

"We have the front three who would get into any team in the Premier League. We just give them the ball and know they can create things.

"We have the three behind who will work their socks off for 90 minutes. And the back four will dig in there and be resilient.

"We are a proper team now. We are there for each other, week in and week out.

"The newboys have bought into the mentality. There's a really strong unit here now. You could see that by the performances so far.

"You know the guy next to you is going to give it absolutely everything and last 90 minutes beside you. We're all in it together.

"We have winners here. The manager certainly breeds that mentality. And we're all on that wavelength."
