Villa v Rotherham preview: Lambert – We have a different mindset

Brown

Paul Lambert says he can already sense a different mindset in his players this season.

Lambert saw his youthful charges gain immense credit from the way they finished the previous campaign and also the manner in which they have begun this term.

Villa boss Lambert believes that there's a new attitude, a new stance, a new outlook in the squad as they get set for this encounter in the Capital One Cup against Rotherham.

He said: "There's a totally different feeling around the football club this time, totally different, a different mindset.

"There's some new lads come in and some lads have left. We needed to freshen it up.

"It's a different mindset all together now.

"You just feel it - you sense it - there's a different feeling here. We are ready. We will be ready for it. We will go on the front foot as we always do.

"We have had to play three gruelling games in succession which have been really tough for us. But the lads have been excellent.

"We have deserved more than we have got. But we have a lot of confidence at the minute because of the way we have been playing.

"We are playing really well, that's the good thing. There's a whole different feeling in the team now to what there was last time.

"The way we have played in the first three games has been really beneficial for us in the way we have got at it. I have nothing but praise for the team."

The subject of team selection will be interesting on Wednesday.

Some suggest Lambert might rest the players who have gone to the well for him so bravely against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Others believe he might stick with those same warriors due to the fact there's no game for two weekends.

Lambert himself has yet to decide but he insists whoever he picks must be at-it from the off against the Millers.

He added: "Whatever team I pick is expected to keep the standard of performance they have shown. I am not treating it lightly. Whoever I pick will be ready.

"We have to do what we've been doing in the last three games. Nothing less. We have to perform at that level. If we do that we will have a chance to get through.

"I know it's going to be hard. But the lads are right on their game at this moment.

"We will give Rotherham respect with the start they have made. They will raise their game. But the onus is on us to get through.

"You can't treat any game lightly. You have to try and win. You have to try and get through.

"Everyone knows the Premier League is the bread and butter but a cup competition, if you're in it you try and win it.

"We are at home. We will go and try to progress as far as we can go."

Programme

MATCH PROGRAMME

Villa v Rotherham United in the Capital One Cup evokes memories of the first-ever League Cup final in 1961.

And to mark our achievement in becoming the first winners of the competition, we have produced a giant poster of the Villa team that beat the Millers in the final more than half a century ago.

The pull-out poster appears in the programme for the second round tie against the Millers - with a superb poster of Gabby Agbonlahor on the other side.

Needless to say, there's a strong emphasis on the 1961 final in this edition of the Villa News & Record, while we also look at half-a-dozen of Villa's memorable second round League Cup-ties down the year.

The Rotherham issue features Fabian Delph on the cover, and inside the in-form midfielder explains that he would love to add a few more goals to his game.

The last time he scored, in fact, was exactly a year ago - against Tranmere Rovers in the Capital One Cup.

Marc Albrighton is the man in the spotlight in our new What's in a Name feature, where we take all the initials of a player's name to reveal facts about him.

There are also regular columns by manager Paul Lambert, skipper Ron Vlaar and former Villa striker Stan Collymore, plus a double-page photo of Warwickshire's Ian Bell celebrating England's Ashes triumph - in his Villa shirt.

The Rotherham issue costs £3 and can be brought around the ground.

The Villa News & Record is an essential part of your matchday experience, but for those supporters who can't get to every game, we offer a subscription service at £66 for the season, including postage.

European postage costs an additional £39 and worldwide postage an extra £64.

Subscribers will receive a free Villa cap, worth £10, and you will also be entered into a draw to win a signed home shirt.

MATCH STATS

This is the first competitive meeting between Villa and Rotherham since March 1972.

These two clubs contested the first League Cup final in 1961. Villa lifted the trophy with a 3-0 second leg home victory despite losing the first leg 2-0.

The claret and blues have won seven of their last eight League Cup matches at Villa Park.

Villa scored 17 goals in six matches in last season's Capital One Cup when they reached the semi-final stage.

Christian Benteke and Andi Weimann scored four goals in the League Cup last term. Only Theo Walcott of Arsenal managed more.

Despite being eliminated in five of their last seven League Cup matches, the Millers have scored in six of those games - all against higher league opposition.

Rotherham have not kept a clean sheet in this competition in eight games, conceding four goals on three occasions.
