Arsenal 1-3 Villa: Lambert - We thoroughly deserved the win

Paul Lambert spoke of his delight at the 3-1 victory at Arsenal, saying: "We thoroughly deserved the win."

Boss Lambert hailed the "quality and character" of his team as they stormed back from Olivier Giroud's early goal.

Christian Benteke bagged two penalties while Antonio Luna scored a sensational solo effort to give the visitors a brilliant victory.

Lambert was thrilled with the team performance but picked out Gabby Agbonlahor for special praise, saying that the speed demon was "unplayable" throughout the 90 minutes.

He told AVTV: "I thought the win was fully deserved. I thought we grew into the game after the first 15 minutes.

"We conceded a poor goal and this is one of those places you don't want to concede early-on.

"After that, I thought the counter-attacking play was great and there were some big, big performances from our players.

"As a team and a group, I thought we were well worthy of the win.

"They all showed quality and character. Absolutely. It was the first game and anybody who saw our fixtures will have thought 'no points.'

"But it just shows you that you never know in football.

"But I know the lads and I know they are a threat. We don't get the credit we deserve at times.

"I thought Gabby was unplayable. It was as good a performance as I have seen for a number of years.

"The way he performed at the end of the last season allied to how he started this season, if he keeps that up I think he's definitely worth a shout for maybe the England squad.

"I'm not telling Roy Hodgson how to do his job but it's as good as I have seen him play."

Lambert was thrilled with the quality of all three goals.

He continued: "The first one Christian got a rebound so the good thing was he was alert to it.

"The second was more like it.

"Then the third with Luna was classic counter-attacking football.

"I thought he was looking for Andi but he wasn't catching him. You might as well stick it in yourself."

Despite the attacking impetus, Lambert pointed to two incredible saves after the break from Brad Guzan as vital game-changers.

He continued: "Brad made two world-class saves. In the first half he did fine with nothing much to do but his second half saves were absolutely outstanding,"

Lambert confirmed that Nathan Baker had injured his ankle and will be assessed in the run-up to the Chelsea clash on Wednesday.
