Villa U18 3-0 Newcastle U18: Winning start for youngsters

Harrison

Villa made a storming start to the new Barclays U18 Premier League season with a 3-0 victory over Newcastle.

Second-half goals from Khalid Abdo, Thomas Strain and Courtney Wildin gave Tony McAndrew's side a maximum haul at Bodymoor Heath.

Goalkeeper Aidan Grant - playing against his former club - kept Newcastle at bay during the first period with saves to deny Liam Smith and Greg Olley.

But the Young Lions were flying after the break. Tomas Zazrivec was fouled inside the box and Abdo stepped up to make it 1-0 after 50 minutes.

Full-back Wildin motored forward to double the advantage 11 minutes from time as Villa caught the Magpies on the counter-attack.

Wildin ran on to a pass from influential Swedish midfielder Abdo before slotting past Newcastle keeper Freddie Woodman.

Then, five minutes later, Strain cut inside and fired into the net to round off an excellent performance by the Villa youngsters.

Villa are back in action on Wednesday August 28 with a trip to Leicester City [kick-off 11am].
