Lambert: Let's make England v Scotland a biennial fixture

Brown

Paul Lambert has suggested England v Scotland become a biennial fixture in the football calendar.

Former Scotland star Lambert, who earned 40 caps for his country, was at Wembley for the highly-competitive encounter between the two teams.

Scotland went into a 2-1 lead through James Morrison and Kenny Miller before goals from Danny Welbeck and debutant Ricky Lambert earned the Three Lions an impressive victory.

Lambert loved the atmosphere and enthusiasm surrounding the fixture and hopes to see it played more often.

He said: "I was there. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was a great game - it wasn't a friendly!

"I thought Scotland did really well considering everyone thought it was going to be a hard time for them. They played ever so well.

"We are a country that is trying to build again. But it was great. I am really pleased for them.

"It was great in the crowd. I thought the Scotland fans were fantastic.

"Whether you bring back the Home Internationals I'm not so sure. But the England v Scotland game is prestigious.

"Even if you held it one every two years - at Hamden and then at Wembley - that would be great.

"It was there for everyone to see what that can generate."

There were concerns surrounding the fixture after crowd trouble in previous encounters.

But Lambert thinks those days are now long gone.

He added: "I think the days of violence are now all in the past. It was a spectacle and a terrific atmosphere."
