European Cup hero McNaught: Benteke's potential? It's scary!

European Cup legend Ken McNaught has pondered the potential of star striker Christian Benteke and admitted: "It's scary!"

McNaught is a firm admirer of man mountain Benteke after commentating on plenty of matches for AVTV during the previous campaign, which saw him bag 23 goals in all competitions.

But the League Championship winner thinks there's more to come from the powerful forward, who he would have loved to face in his prime back in the 1980s golden era.

He said: "Big Benteke is superb and the scary thought is that he's only going to get better.

"He is superb in the air, he has great power and he's quick aswell.

"His link up play improved greatly towards the end of the campaign too.

"He's only 23. He is going to be learning all the time - and getting better all the time.

"This is only his first season in the Premier League, the top division in the world. What a snip at £7m!

"From what I have seen - and it's a fair bit - he plays with such confidence and that spreads throughout the team. I saw a lot of that last season."

McNaught sees Benteke as a colossal threat to defences but he knows that the trio of forwards - including Andi Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor - will bring Villa plenty of joy collectively this term.

He added: "Andi's work rate is tremendous. As a defender you hate a little fella nibbling at your feet all the time and putting pressure on you to deliver the ball quickly because you like to take the pace out of it now and again.

"If Andi is at you and nipping at your ankles, you have to keep the ball going.

"And then there's Gabby with his electrifying pace. Defenders hate pace and Gabby has it in abundance.

"His pace and the aerial presence of Benteke are key weapons at certain points in games.

"Any occasions when we play a ball up to Benteke, he will make it his and then as long as Gabby keeps gambling and taking that chance to go for it behind, you're going to get a lot of joy.

"If you're a back four, you want to push up as much as you can to give yourself a high line because you want your own strikers to be in the opposition penalty box.

"But all it takes is one good ball and it turns defence into attack quickly."
