Wycombe 2-2 Villa: Lambert - We've still got a lot of work to do
Paul Lambert was pleased with his injury-hit squad's efforts against Wycombe but admitted: "We've still got a lot of work to do."
Lambert called upon the likes of Jack Grealish, Graham Burke, Janoi Donacien and Josh Webb for the clash at Adams Park, with a handful of his first choice players rested because of niggles.
And he was impressed with the contributions of the academy aces.
But the Villa boss was disappointed to see Andreas Weimann and Jordan Bowery hobbling off with hip and back injuries respectively.
"We said before it is always about getting more minutes under our belts," said the manager.
"We have one or two knocks at the minute which isn't helping and there are a lot of younger kids in the fray.
"But they never let themselves down and it is about fitness levels.
"If you look at the team that finished at the end there were a lot of kids there as well.
"That's down to the injuries we've got at the moment back at the training ground but from that point of view it is pleasing to see the younger kids coming on.
"Andi and Jordan are both sore so we'll see how they are ahead of Tuesday.
"The disappointing thing is there are one or two knocks that we could do without.
"But it shows we've still got a lot of work to do here."
Villa twice came from behind to earn a draw at Wycombe thanks to goals from Matt Lowton and Ashley Westwood.
Both players signed contract extensions earlier in the week.
"Westie is a really clever player, everybody knows that," added Lambert.
"Matty pops up with the odd goal but I've said before, it is not about the scoreline, it is about getting fitness levels up and getting into a way of playing so we can go into that Arsenal game ready."
