Guzan: I'm delighted to be giving Villa the best years of my career

Brad Guzan is relishing giving the best years of his career to Villa.

Guzan says he owes Villa a lot after they resigned him in the summer and then promoted him to No.1 ahead of veteran stopper Shay Given.

He called the experience of playing as the team's main goalkeeper "fantastic" and is hoping for many more seasons between the sticks in claret and blue.

During pre-season, of course, Guzan penned a new deal, a decision he called a "no-brainer."

He said: "It's been an exciting time. There had been conversations throughout the summer about my contract. I knew it was a possibility. To have it sorted for when I came back was fantastic.

"To pledge my future to the club when I'm coming to the best years of my career, it's an exciting time for me and for the club obviously because of the changes and where the manager wants to take the club in terms of turning over a new leaf.

"I think it will be good times ahead. The decision was a bit of a no-brainer.

"I have been here a few years now. To play consistently for the entire season was a huge point in my career individually and obviously as a club to make sure we stayed up.

"I owe a lot to Aston Villa on a personal level. To be a part of such a huge club with huge tradition, it was a no-brainer of a decision.

"To play in the Premier League week in and week out like I did last season for such a tremendous club was fantastic."

Guzan also says that the hard times he had to endure at the start of his Villa career gave him a "thick skin" and also means he'll be ferocious in his determination to stay as first-choice goalkeeper.

He added: "As a goalkeeper, you have to draw on experiences.

"Look at Brad Friedel and Mark Schwarzer - those experienced goalkeepers - these guys are playing into their 40s and they talk about young goalkeepers needing to go through tough times to make them stronger.

"You need that tough skin to come through adversity and be stronger on the other side.

"It all started on day one for me when the work permit didn't come, I had to wait six months and then arrived at the club and didn't play as much as I would have liked for the first four years.

"I had a taste of English football in the cups but up until last year, it was the first time I was able to play consistently and use those difficult periods and use that taste of not playing to really motivate me and push me to make sure once I had a taste I wasn't going to let go of it."
