Weimann Week: Lambert on striker's "drive and hunger"
Paul Lambert believes Andreas Weimann has the "drive and hunger" to take his game to the next level after the striker penned a new three-year deal.
Since taking over at Villa Park last summer, Lambert has spoken on several occasions of the Austrian international's exceptional work ethic and attitude.
Weimann was one of the major success stories of the 2012-13 campaign, delivering 12 goals and a string of tireless performances.
And boss Lambert believes the 21-year-old's insatiable appetite for the game will lead him to a successful career.
"He scored that last minute goal against Fulham, so I knew bits about him," said the Villa chief.
"I knew he was still in and out. He was here under Martin O'Neill as well. I think [coaches] Steve Walford, John Robertson and the gaffer spoke highly of him and he was just a young kid at the time.
"But you are never quite sure until you come in yourself to see if he can actually do it.
"The big thing that strikes me is his work ethic. That's the big thing. You don't need to be the greatest player on the planet but if you have got a work ethic it can take you far in the game, if you've got that drive and hunger to succeed."
Lambert says Weimann has benefited from having an extended run in the team for the first time in his career.
The academy graduate was on the fringes of the senior side under Alex McLeish during the 2011-12 campaign before going on to play 38 times in all competitions last term.
"He has been exceptional, Andi," added Lambert.
"I know his main position is probably through the middle off a striker but his performances on that right side, coming off the lines and things like that, have been outstanding.
"The thing is with Andi the previous year, he was probably in and out all of the time. What we've done is given him a run at it - a sustained run.
"One thing about Andi is he is a natural finisher. He knows where the goal is which is great for us.
"Success won't go to his head, I don't think. I don't think money will go to his head and that is a big compliment.
"Whatever he earns or whatever success he gets, I think he'll always be the same."
