International Friendly: Benteke bags a brace for Belgium in USA

Brown

Christian Benteke bagged two goals in the second half as Belgium beat USA 4-2 in an international friendly in Cleveland, Ohio.

It was level 1-1 at the break but Belgium turned on the style after the break to win the tie. In the first-half, goalkeeper Tim Howard met Romelu Lukaku at the ball and the USA defenders failed to clear the rebound, leaving Kevin Mirallas to chip the ball into the net.

Defender Geoff Cameron would make up for his mistake moments later.

The right back moved forward for a corner kick and headed in a beautiful assist from Clint Dempsey, who headed the long corner back across the six-yard box.

It was Cameron's first international goal of his career.

But Belgium weren't to be outdone at the FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns.

Benteke, who came on for Moussa Dembele in the first-half, scored in the 56th and 71st minutes for Belgium, past good pal Brad Guzan, who was a substitute replacement himself for Howard.

Boasting a strong line-up with no less than 10 players from the Barclays Premier League, Belgium looked a real force to be reckoned with at the upcoming World Cup.

With the scores even in the 56th minute, defender Omar Gonzalez failed to clear the ball.

It was picked up by Kevin De Bruyne who centred it to Benteke for an easy tap-in past Guzan.

Guzan came up with a nice save in the 64th minute but seconds later he was fishing the ball from his net again.

Maroune Fellaini headed his goal into the left corner off a beautiful cross by De Bruyne to make it 3-1.

In the 71st minute, Benteke streaked behind defenders DaMarcus Beasley and Matt Besler and chipped in a pass from Steven Defour.

The United States cut the deficit in half when referee Jeffery Solis awarded a penalty following a handball call against Toby Alderweireld. Dempsey pounded in a spot-kick in the 80th minute for the United States.

It was the first time the Americans had conceded three or more goals since a year ago, May 30, 2012, when they were beaten 4-1 by Brazil in another high-profile friendly on US soil.

The USA will face the world's second-best team in Germany in Washington D.C. on Sunday followed by three World Cup qualifying matches.
