Hong Kong Sevens: Verity hails Villa spirit after Shield victory

Harrison

Sean Verity hailed Villa's powers of recovery after they bounced back from their Hong Kong Soccer Sevens quarter-final disappointment to win the Shield competition.

The claret and blues suffered an agonising last eight defeat to eventual winners Leicester City early on Sunday.

But the Villa young guns picked themselves up to beat South China and Manchester City in the Shield competition for losing quarter-finalists.

And Verity felt his side deserved credit for quickly putting the Leicester disappointment behind them.

"It was very pleasing because you lose the Leicester game and you've got all the disappointment around that and it would have been easy to just cave in and say that's it we've finished," said the head coach.

"I couldn't be any prouder that they came back and won the final two games.

"Especially the last game - they showed a lot of character.

"We didn't play our best against Man City but I'm delighted we won the game because when you look at the programme next year Aston Villa's name will be in it and if you can't win the main competition this is the next best thing."

Verity admits the luck didn't go Villa's way in the epic quarter-final clash against Leicester.

His team showed tremendous resilience to bounce back from 3-0 down before losing in extra-time to a golden goal.

"Physically they can outdo us and we gave away a couple of sloppy goals but we showed what Aston Villa and these lads are about," said Verity.

"Some of them have been at the club eight, nine or 10 years now and what we are trying to breed is the fact that they never give in.

"At 2-0 down I was doubting us thinking it might be one too far. But then we got a bit of luck with the deflection and we were back on.

"The way they came back from 3-0 down was absolutely fantastic.

"I actually thought in the last minute if we'd have moved the ball a bit better we'd have won the game."

Verity said the Soccer Sevens weekend was another terrific experience for the young side.

"Every little part of this - the fact that you win is massive - but the experience of this is massive," he added.

"It is a really, really good tournament, really important for the kids.

"It is part of the learning experience and if they learn from it they'll be better for it."
