Agbonlahor Week: STATS - Gabby figures on the up

In the first of a number of player focuses from the guys over at football statistics website WhoScored.com, the limelight is on Villa's longest serving player Gabby Agbonlahor.

After a tough start to the campaign, hampered by niggling injuries, Gabby Agbonlahor had a great second half of the season in the claret and blue.

The forward ended up with a goal tally of nine, with eight of his league strikes coming since the turn of the year, while he also claimed three assists to directly contribute to an impressive 25.5% of Villa's overall tally (47).

Only eight Barclays Premier League players have netted more league goals since January 1, with Agbonlahor back in top form having broken Dwight Yorke's long-standing club goal record in England's top flight.

Having moved on to 63, at just 26-years-old he's well on his way to stretching that record.

A look at his statistics from the 2012-13 season compared to the two campaigns previous shows a significant increase in form and, having forged an encouraging front three with Christian Benteke and Andi Weimann, the signs look good for further development.

In an injury hit 2010-11 season under the tutelage of Gerard Houllier, Agbonlahor made just 26 league appearances of which only 17 were starts.

He scored three league goals in the process, with a chance conversion rate of 10.3%.

With 1.1 shots per game, 0.8 key passes per game and 0.5 dribbles per game, it was a tough season for the frontman.

The next season he bagged five league goals, as well as contributing with five assists, showing improvements across the board.

He started 32 of his 33 league appearances, captaining the side in the absence of Stiliyan Petrov, with no other team-mate contributing more goals and assists combined (10).

Despite his improvements in the previous campaign, the current season has been his most impressive in recent years statistically.

Agbonlahor has started fewer games (24 of 28 appearances in total) but his goal tally has almost doubled.

With those strikes coming from fewer shots per game (1.7), his chance conversion rate has rocketed to 18.8%, while his pass accuracy has also jumped significantly under Paul Lambert, from 72.7% last season to an excellent 81.2% this term.

Statistically, his best league performance was the match-winning display at Carrow Road earlier this month, picking up a rating of 8.69 from WhoScored.com.

He scored with both of his shots on target, and from five efforts in total, as well as setting up two chances for playing pals, delivering an accurate cross and a precise throughball.

If he picks up where he left off, 2013-14 should be an excellent campaign for Villa's favourite son.
