Villa Ladies preview: Hunt - We want to go out on a high

Brown

Joe Hunt is eager for Villa Ladies to sign-off with a victory this afternoon at Man City Ladies.

Hunt has called for a response after back-to-back defeats following their League Cup Final win, including an immensely frustrating derby loss to Coventry Ladies at Villa Park on Tuesday.

He wants their "rollercoaster ride" of a season to end on a high.

Villa Ladies would ensure fifth place in the National League with a win today and could even finish fourth depending on the Coventry Ladies v Portsmouth Ladies result next weekend.

Hunt said: "There have been so many ups and downs this term but we have ended the season with a National Trophy. That's something really positive to take from this season.

"We also had the good news of being successful in our Super League application. This is not based on results on the pitch. It's the overall package of the club.

"We are in a good place at the moment. The club have been fantastic in their support for the female game, as shown with our application and the use of the Villa Park pitch on Tuesday.

"Tuesday was hard to take for us all. It was the story of our season, really.

"We have all reflected on it, myself included and we know we can do better.

"I can't knock the desire, sometimes it's our application.

"For next season we need to add consistency to our league programme. We have so much to work on over the summer, both defensively and offensively.

"But, for the moment, I want us to go out on a positive note today.

"We all have something to prove for next season. Knowing the team they'll put a big performance in, hopefully getting all three points."

Sherry McCue missed much of the campaign with an ankle injury before returning over the past few weeks.

Unfortunately, though, she's picked up the same problem and will miss the final game.

He added: "I'm gutted for her as she has worked so hard to get back in the team.

"She makes us tick when she's in the side - a real team player with plenty of passion and desire to go with her outstanding ability.

"I'm very fortunate, though, to have players of the same ability. Maddy Cusack and Abbeyleigh Stringer have the same tools.

"They want to improve all the time and have figured in a high percentage of our games, making the transition from centre of excellence football to ladies football.

"The future is very bright at Villa."

Squad: Walsh, Cooper, Lowe, Petrovic, Richards, Courtney, Crackle, Moran, Merritt, Cusack, Stringer, Follis, Fergusson, Merrick, Davies, Jones.
